The best shooters encourage players to take part in a way that suits the game’s tone and universe, and Helldivers 2 is certainly one of them. You play in a sort of demented panic, calling in airstrikes with abandon and getting through ammo so fast you end up carrying huge backpacks of the stuff everywhere you go.
Avoid moving around when you're aiming. The tutorial will cover this, explaining how your reticle will move all over the place when you're firing your weapon, and if you want to take down enemies, precision is key.
If you’ve ever fantasised about starring in your own version of Paul Verhoeven’s blistering sci-fi satire Starship Troopers, you can now rest easy: your wish has been answered. Helldivers 2, the sequel to the 2015 topdown co-op shooter, is an em linha game in which beefy space marines blast down to alien planets and, spurred on by jingoistic slogans, pulverise anything that moves with super hi-tech weaponry.
The best part about the live-service model that they implemented is that you choose the rewards you want to get albeit with some restrictions. They also added new armor types in the game as opposed to the first game, where armor is actually something that you need to optimize now as it was purely cosmetic before. To add to this, the live-service model makes the game have actual missions and goals for you to pursue. Helldivers 2 has not been officially announced although the above Tweet seemed to imply it would be making an appearance soon, especially as the few seconds of gameplay footage leaked by Twitter user Adam has since been removed “in response to a report from the copyright owner.” Helldivers 2 was also one of many games that was leaked during the GeForce Now internal database leak approximately a year ago, further lending credence to the rumors.
The quality level is high, presenting without obvious aliasing, even on the PS5 in its performance mode. The clouds are also volumetric in nature, at least at lower levels of the atmosphere, and resolve without distracting artifacting. Low-lying fog also appears to be part of the equation, with ground-level fog often giving planets a certain ethereal quality. Environmental density is impressive. There's a lot of scattered rocks, shrubs, and tufts of grass throughout the various planets. Given the size and scope of the game I have to imagine that procedural systems have been used extensively here, but the final results look quite conterraneo. Foliage in particular can be generously placed, with some especially verdant garden worlds. I did note animation issues with the foliage on at least one planet but on a more macro level, lighting and assets come together to make each world feel distinct, giving each environment some nice vistas.
